Did you know that along with Tonga and Dominican Republic, Tahiti is one of the last places on earth where you can legally dive with Whales. Why? Because humpback whales are protected by law. Specifically in French Polynesia, these whales are protected because of why they come to Polynesia in the first place. Whales complete a 2-4 month migration to arrive in Tahiti to safely give birth to their calves in the warm waters. The mothers are able to give birth, take care of their babies, and rest before heading back to colder temperatures. In order for mother humpback whales to be able to do this peacefully, French Polynesia has strict laws about whale encounters, so that the boats do not disturb them.
While there are many rules and guidelines when it comes to whale encounters, we only work with those who not only respect the rules, but the respect the animals. The dive companies we work with have master divers and whale experts on board, keeping the whale's (and yours) peace and safety the top priority.
You've seen all the photos and videos on instagram. Some of those violate the rules. But-- that doesn't mean you won't get a chance to capture an encounter that close! Sometimes the whales come up close to you, and its magical! We always ensure that we don't approach the whales, we allow them to decide. We have found that the babies in particular are very playful and curious, and often come up close! Its a life-changing experience you will never forget.
Plan your whale dive trip to Tahiti with us! Whale season starts in August and ends in November. We'll help you discover an encounter of a lifetime!
